Epictetus, 50 – 135
Epictetus (c. 50–135 AD) was a Greek Stoic philosopher who was born into slavery in Hierapolis, Phrygia. After gaining his freedom, he studied under the Stoic teacher Musonius Rufus and later founded his own school in Nicopolis. His teachings, recorded by his student Arrian in the 'Discourses' and 'Enchiridion', emphasise that philosophy is a way of life centred on distinguishing what is within our control from what is not, and that true freedom comes from mastering one's own judgements and desires.
