How to play

  1. Read the quote and type the name of the thinker you think wrote it. You have six guesses.
  2. Each guess shows three clues: whether the author lived in the same century (⏩ later, ⏪ earlier), belongs to the same school of thought, and comes from the same region.
  3. A yellow square means you are close: a related school (for example Stoicism and Ancient Greek philosophy) or the same continent.
  4. Everyone gets the same quote each day. A new one arrives at midnight UTC. Share your grid without spoiling the answer.

About the quotes

Every puzzle comes from the Sagius library of more than 6,600 quotes by 238 philosophers, translated into English, French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. The daily pool covers 65 thinkers from Confucius and Heraclitus to Simone de Beauvoir and Albert Camus.

Popular misattributions are filtered out on purpose: lines that the internet credits to Plato, Buddha or Voltaire but that they never wrote will not appear here. If you spot one that slipped through, tell us and we will retire it.
